The world grows and evolves consistently based on ideas and inspiration from those who have changed the world in an impactful way, whether it may have been negative or positive. The term creativity can be defined as “The use of imagination or original ideas to create something, inventiveness”. Creativity seems like a very broad and complex concept based on this definition.
Universally there is no consensus on what the definition of creativity is which demonstrates how much there is to be explored around it. If that is the case, then one must wonder why it has been so easily used to tag certain niches and individuals involved in certain careers or pursuing business in specific industries.
Majority of the definitions around creativity have specific common denominators, originality, functionality and collaboration in action or in thoughts and ideas. Is it rigid and backwards for us as a society to limit ourselves by only considering ourselves as creative because we are designers, content creators and entertainers just to mention a few?
Ultimately, we are all creative and are inspired by what we see and think about around us every day. Perhaps creativity isn’t all about colour, style and aesthetic. Maybe it’s about darkness, simplicity and things that can’t be defined as well.
Either way we should not be limited and fear judgement in embracing creativity because it doesn’t fit the status quo of the hundreds of definitions nobody can decide to agree on. Look out for this week’s podcast episode where we will have an in-depth conversation about exploring creativity.
